agentalbert:I also have Tribe, but as I mostly listen in MCH, I wasn't disappointed by the lack of a discrete stereo mix. Your point is well taken, though, and it seems the trend now is to include a hires stereo mix.
Just wondering - my Denon 3800 has a problem with the screen graphic that appears with each song while playing the hires surround mix. It attempts to load the picture, but invariably the screen freezes with the graphic only partly loaded for each song. (It scrolls down from the top, but just a sliver or so of the graphic appears.) I was able to 'fix' this by pressing the fast-forward or reverse buttons on the remote - this causes it to reset & it reappears without incident. Have you experienced this?
Also, you had posted concerning the new Iron Maiden DVD-A. I just received it yesterday and, though it does sound a bit muddy (espectially the rhythm guitars in the surrounds), I really enjoy it. It certainly isn't reference quality or even something I would get out for friends to demonstrate the benefits of DVD-A; still I've heard worse. The surround mix isn't too gimmicky & the bass was a little more subtle than I expected (I don't own & haven't heard the CD.) The videos - in 5.1 - are a plus, though the imagery in Rainmaker doesn't really do it for me. Looks like a deleted scene from Eyes Wide Shut...

I haven't experieced the problem you had. I've had some other issues with other DVD-A discs not letting me access the surround mix and forcing me to stereo no matter what I choose(FM's Say You Will, Sting's Brand New Day), but haven't had the problem you describe.I ordered the Maiden DVD-A from amazon.co.uk You didn't mention whether it has a discrete 2ch mix or not. Does it? I hope so. I don't always want to sit in the listening position while listening to music. Sometimes I'm in the kitchen cooking or moving around doing housework. I prefer a 2ch mix for that. Or for listening with headphones late at night.
interestingly enough, my DVD player reads it as 88.2 kHz with a bit depth of only 16; the 5.1 mix is 88.2 & 24. I couldn't really verify this against anything because EMI didn't list these particulars anywhere on the packaging. Not really sure why they would do this for a hires mix...
Bizarre! Thanks for letting me know. It just shipped from amazon.uk yesterday. I hope I like it. If not, maybe I'll try the vinyl. Or maybe this is just a recording that will never sound excellent. Too many guitars...
