This was suggested as the best player under $ 300 a few weeks back, and there were a few who had ordered one. Is anyone in a position to offer their thoughts on the player?
Follow Ups:
I read the manual the other day and noted that the mfr. thinks that the player sounds better with the display dimmed. (??)
I have this CD player. The front panel's made from a thick slab of aluminum. Sturdy and heavy. I opened the case to take a peek, and it looks like it's built with quality components, compared to my Toshiba DVD player. Nicely laid out inside, and the power supply looks beefy.I've ordered some opamp modules to see what, if anything, they do to the sound.
The click is from an output relay. Not too bothersome.
The drawer does lumber outward and there's some slop on the tail end of things. It's a Philips transport, which is supposed to be good.
Oh Lord,What Op Amps are you putting in? I'm definately interested in your results. Let us know.
I know the Burr Brown OPA627 are very, very popular upgrades for the Music Hall. Suppose to make the player sound more analog.Underwoodwalley uses them in his modded MH and Onix players. You can also go to eCoustics.com. One of the reviews there, compares the level 1 to the level 2 mods. I think the level 2 mod is basically just the OPA627 upgrades over the level 1 mod. They go into very good detail about the OPA627 upgrade.
Also look on Audiogon. You can find the OPA627 with adapter that is a 5 minuted drop in and only requires a screwdriver for the Onix and MH. Cost about $50 each. Don't know if the Oxix takes one or two
it's a 6moons review which discusses replacing the opamps. seems like you need 2 of them. nice article, by the way. I may get the onix and give it a shot. As long as it doesn't require soldering (and seems like it doesn't).
Thanks thats it. The second 6moons review of the CD25. Looking on audiogon can't find the OPA627 with adapter. I know its from PartsConnexion who also does the level 1 & 2 mods for Wally.Th-th-th-thats allll F-f-f-folks :)
SoundOdyssey offers OPA627 with adapter, and I'm sure many other DIY suppliers as well.
I would just suggest you do a word search about the Music Hall CD-25. Its the exact same player.
I've had mine for about a week and couldn't be happier. The only complaint I have, and this is really just picking, is that the remote has labeled buttons that don't do anything and I wish the drawer didn't sound so "clanky" when opening and closing. Other than these nit-picks, I like the sound and performance alot. For the price, it's a steal!
Ken I recently purchased one as well, but wanted an open opinion before I offered mine. I agree with your comments, as well as the post a few days ago about the relay "click" when you hit play. Three relatively small issues for a player that sounds this good at the low cost of $299.00 . I wonder if dampening the inside will reduce the irritating "click"?
I've gotten used to the click so it doesn't really bother me much. I haven't opened it up and looked inside so I can't comment on damping but I WOULD like to make that drawer less clanky....After some more listening, I have to use an expression that I know most don't like to see one describe the sound of a component with. I know what it means in the context it's used but I rarely, if ever, us it...
but I gotta say........
