Hello,I just received my Foreplay III kit today. Wooohoo! Instead of the 0D3 tube pictured online, it contained a Raytheon 0D3W tube. The 0D3W has plastic shielding and a sort of foam packing completely surrounding the tube. I am a complete novice and I was wondering:
1. What is the shielding/packing for?
2. How else does the 0D3W differ from the 0D3?
3. If I wanted to order an 0D3 (just because they look cool), who's a good supplier?Forgive my ignorance. I am a complete novice with limited electronic knowledge of any kind. It just seemed odd to wrap a hot tube in what appears to be...insulation?
Thanks in advance for your input.

The idea is to give you a nice shunt-regulated 150 Volts. Some specimens may be noisier than others, but the noise is very broadband. So, yes, any OD3/VR-150 will work, but you may like some better than others.
I don't know anything about tubes, except i don't like the one i have. Based totally on aesthetics. Any suggestions about which ones to try? I'm not only interested in looks, i just really don't like that one. thanks.
They have no heater, as in a conventional tube, and at maximum current flow, there would only be about 5 Watts of power involved. My stash of glass ones came from Antique ELectronic supply, and are very cool Candian RCAs in a box that allowed one to test them before purchasing. IIRC, they were only $2.00 on sale. They have a very cool purplish-blue glow.
...I also received my FPIII today, with the brown OD3. It is a military version of the tube, and highly ruggedized. Granted it's looks aren't for everybody, but the 0D3 is one of the cheaper tubes out there...I have bought a few NOS RCA's for under $5 each.

I had just one of those babies in my stash and thought it so cool that it's been in my own FPIII ever since. They are ruggedized for military gear and might even sound a little better than a regular issue tube. When we got our shipment of 0D3s in and it turned out to be these nifty W guys I figured that there would be a split between those who want performance and those who want looks. Me, I'm a performance guy ;^)>
Yeah, the 0D3W looked at home on your Foreplay. They are certainly rarer/harder to find on the open market than the standard 0D3...they are also a relatively new production tube...think mine says 1984!

I also received my Foreplay III today by the man in brown!! WOOHOO!!! I think the stock 0D3 looks kind of cool but have also obtained some other 0D3's off of Ebay so will do some tube rolling. Cant't wait to start construction! Thanks Doc and Eileen!!

Isn't that OD3W *UGLY*? I got one in my FP III kit also but it will never see service. I'm not sure about the shielding but it looks like maybe it's to protect other components from heat? Closed quarters applications perhaps.Fortunately, I had purchased some OD3's on Ebay a long time ago, when I first ordered the FP kit. It looks like several of the tube suppliers online carry OD3's or you can check Ebay.
Yeah. The looks didn't do too much for me. I wanna see that sweet blue glow. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I've got to get the thing assembled and running first. Thanks for all your input, fellas.
on the subject, does anyone have some recommendations for tube rolling? High dollar OK. Will probably be mating this with some paraglows. Thanks
