Yep, the DV is significantly better than the ASL Mini. ASL makes a nice sounding phono section in their main preamp, but the mini is a dog of a unit. The Denon cartridge would be my pick of the two an .......

You might also add the ASL mini-phono to the list. Tube based and meets your price guieline. I am using one with my MMF5 and I like it. The dealer I bought both from carries Creek and prefers the ASL. .......

I own the Mini Phono and use the V15 into it, but I have to say that the ASL's output is quite low, and the Shure can sound lacking in energy, if your speakers aren't sensitive, and your system loud. .......

The ASL Mini Phono, which I use, will only accomodate high-output cartridges. So unless you have a step-up of some kind, then concentrate on the better MMs, such as the Shure V15VxMR, the Clearaudios, .......

Any tube power transformer is going to have taps for the recitier tube. I don't see your point. A ceramic tube socket is $2.00 That circuit is pretty much identical to the lastest ASL Mini Phono DT2, .......

I use an ASL Mini Phono, and being a tubed unit, I believe it won't be matched in the midrange by the Rega. However, the Rega is likely stronger in the bass, where the ASL is slightly weak. But for it .......

I am undecided. I initially liked it a lot as it was a big improvement over the Radio Shack. However, it seemed a bit bass shy and foreward. I played with tube swapping and some tubes were an improvem .......

Tyrone, The Mini has a gain of 57dB, which is not really suitable for HOMC or most MM carts. At 5.0 mV your optimum gain is about 36 db with a gain factor of 891 x @ 25 hz. Take a V15 with 3 mV - opti .......

Wow, checking the product link below, the mini phono has 57 db of gain! That is low output MC territory. That is a lot of gain for a MM or even a High output MC. I would be worried about overload, esp .......

My MMF-5 is very very listenable now. The tubes are good at negating some of the negative qualities of the MMF-5. Yet sounds smooth and detailed. If theres anyone in the sacramento area looking let me .......

Mike, The simaudio web page lists the input sensitivity of the I-5 as 300 mV to 3 V. So, you are overdriving the input, at least if the ASL is really putting out the calculated voltage. I have no idea .......

Yes, it would mate reasonably well. The Eroica HOMC cartridge has an O/P of 2.5 mV. under "standard" conditions. The published gain for the ASL unit is 57 dB. That means you would get 1.77 V. of drive .......
