I've come across RCA side-getter, cleartop 12AX7s. Sorry if I'm the last person to bump into these but while I'm familiar with other RCA cleartop tube designes I'd never seen these before. Any opinion .......

I have never seen one of these in person, but the construction looks very similar to the RCA cleartop. The RCA cleartop is very nice indeed, though I am using Philips SQ 5814A (made by Siemanns) which .......

it's dirt cheap! The cleartop has a nice full, round tone. Also, Amperex 12AU7 is very airy and dynamic, but probably similar to the RT. .......

Hi Ignacio, It's me again. I have the two tubes you mentioned in front of me. The RCA black grid 6BH6 or whatever should form a cylinder inside the tube. It should be dull mat black instead of glossy .......

Which way did you go Henry? The cleartop in or out? For the time being I will use the cleartops when I am using MM. When I go to the MC I will put in 12AT7 Mullards. The Tele's 12AX7 will always be in .......

KarlK, I know of only two makers of "cleartop" or sidegetter 12AU7s: RCA and Brimar. I have examples of the Brimars and they are somewhat similar to the RCA, but definetely of their own design and man .......

I agree that the 6680 would be considered "premium" variant of the 12AU7A, and in this case what you ended up with is a premium variant of the RCA 12AU7A cleartop. This tube is as Jim describes. The R .......

They are really not bad tubes at all. They just suffer from the "classic warm, soft" tube sound. They are lacking in detail compared to a good cleartop and they have a darker tonality to them in my ap .......

12AU7A is an American tube # designation; European tubes would have ECC82/12AU7 or similar. I've never seen any clear-top/sidegetter USA except RCA, but I certainly haven't seen everything; still wait .......

First, use the search engine, there is lots on these. Second, the cleartop is over-rated compared to many of the decent 12au7 tubes. The ct has desirable attributes, but is ultimately unrefined up top .......

I have a couple of cleartops with GE stencil style markings. I also have GE (having trouble with number here) 6211 I think, 12AU7 sized computer tubes with cleartop/sidegetter. Could have been a tempo .......

Tubes are a very much personal thing. What one person likes, another may not. I do prefer the sound of the RCA Cleartop. I have tried and own numerous 12AU7 derivatives. I like the "Cleartop" for it's .......

That's plenty of info. The tube is a Sylvania 6189/12AU7WA. The "WA" indicates ruggedized milspec construction. As your ears have already told you, it's nothing special for audio. Both the RCA 5693 an .......

I like them. They do a bang up job with bass. Better than the cleartop in my setup. Not quite as large of a soundstage as the cleartop. I'm torn between the smoother, more intimate yet a bit laid back .......

Nope, big guy, these are 9 pin cleartop type tubes marked 12AU7/ECC82 and having Brimar near the top in white paint. The getter halo is described as D in shape, but it hard to see well because it's up .......

Jeff, I don't know about these particular tubes. But the term cleartop simply means that there is no getter at the top of the tube, it is completely clear, and the getter is a round circle on the side .......

I've only seen red printed. But some of those have different plates. The ones I thought were superior had a pair of little round holes in the side (edge)of each plate. Haven't found any more of them y .......

Probably any major tube vendor can supply them. They are dirt cheap. I know Tube World has some. These tubes have a smoother top end and lower coloration than RCA cleartop. IMO But a really nice pair .......

The cleartop RCA are very good, but I found the Sylvania 6FQ7 worked better for me. There is a RCA 6CG7 that is different than the 6CG7/6FQ7,but I have never seen one. .......

Orion 6CG7s used to be fairly plentiful - they are rebranded Ei valves with a very nice sound. The benchmark 6CG7 is the RCA "cleartop" and the Orions compare well. I've not heard the EH valves. ::: T .......

Probably one of my favorite 12au7's. Very nice midrange, good detail but not overly detailed or zippy. One of my other favorites is the RFT 12au7 if you can find them. A little more balanced sounding. .......

The best tubes I have used in my Foreplay preamp are Mullard CV4003 (a variant of 12AU7's), much better than cleartops in my system. Also better than Seimens E82CC. Mullard's can be purchased here: ht .......

I use one of these in my preamp. According to the manual, it is limited to a max plate voltage of 250V, and it has a special cathode construction. The sound is really nice- better than the 12AU7 clear .......
