Sorry for the delayed response... There is a cap in the signal path between the DAC and Opamp, and between the opamp and the RCA jacks. I do not have the locations off the top of my head.. -Vinnie ::: .......

Hi, With a 10K passive potentiometer , you should not be getting any distortion. I have used a 10K pot with the 3960 and have not heard any of this distortion. First check to make sure your connection .......

I just picked up a Toshiba 3980 to mod for a customer, and discovered that they are now putting them in metal enclosures...just like the good ol' 3950 :-) A few other 3980s that I've modded used plast .......

It's a nice digital out. You need to set it up in the on-screen menu for the correct setting for your dac. Probably downsampled PCM. -Vinnie .......

Yup, the new 3980 is the best sounding one stock, IMO. It also sounds the best of the batch after mods! The transport is very quiet, very smooth. Cheers to Toshiba for the improvements w/o raising the .......

Dave, Yeah, the stock sound is suprisingly decent. Putting in a better opamp (OPA2604) and leaving the gain alone is the way to go IMO. With the new opamp, I seriously doubt there is any clipping. Eve .......

To reduce the gain, it is best to have the schematic of the circuit. You need to caluculate the gain based on the feedback resistors, and then reduce it by changing a resistor per channel. I never he .......

The RCAs are connected to the rear panel (towards the back left corner). You can desolder that whole hunk of RCAs, s-video, etc and just use two of the existing holes from the rear plate, then plug up .......

Bas, I've used the digital output of a CD-ROM with an Ack!dAck and it worked fine. The dAck! can handle the TTL voltages of the digital output, but another DAC may require true a SPDIF output level. - .......

jimmyjames, I did the same. I believe it a a form of dynamic range control. It compresses dynamic range, I guess some stereos/TVs don't do well with the huge explosions on DVD, so this option limits .......

I forgot to include a very important note: My comment above is with a unit that I modded (Swenson modded the output of the DAC directly to the outputs via 3.3uF Auricaps). This bypasses the stock opam .......

A while ago I did some investigation and was able to "pseudo-disable" this feature, meaning the power supply remained on at all times, but the display would turn itself off when the player was in idle .......

This would be a pretty complicated project and the improvement would be minimal if any at all IMO. There is no direct digital input, like a coaxial input found on many external DAC units. I'm not sayi .......

While I haven't tried one, the best mod to make this a superb transport would probably be one of those TENT XO2 with the SPDIF reclock circuit. You need a 27MHz version. This device replaces the stock .......

The 3950/3960s use switching power supplies, which are notorious for emitting RF noise. I'm sure some of this noise is in the same KHz band as AM radio. I recommend you locate this player away from yo .......

This is a Tosh product, not a rebadged Samsung. The Tosh 4960 is the one you are thinking of that is the same as the Samsung (which came first, the chicken or the egg? :-) The dac chip in the newer 39 .......

Tommy, I mount the Auricaps inside the player and it works great. I don't see any reason to have to put them outside of the enclosure. I put in two new RCA jacks in the rear plate, and solder one end .......

I did not replace C905. It goes to the Vcom terminal of the DAC. You can try to replace it and if you like the sound, great! I was happy with the results leaving the stock 10uF cap in there. ::: TOPIC .......

I've performed the "Vinnie" mods, replacing the cheap opamp with the OPA opamp. With the test disk I made (using .wav files generated by a program I have), there was NO clipping of the output with a 1 .......

Yes, it will work fine as I do this all the time. Just remember, the analog output voltage of your cdp and dac may be different, so when you switch between them during a song, make sure that you're he .......
