Vintage is a fine solution for 78 and early LP preamplification duties. Something like this is ideal. GE VRII, Shure M3D, Ortofon SPU or Denon 102 should be a fine match. .......

Just got my second Lyrec PTR-1 from Lyrec Canada last weekend. These were the last analog decks designed. The PTR-1 came out in 1989. 27 pounds and handles 12 inch reels with switchable NAB/IEC eq. .......

Hi Allen I have used G-36 for about 20 years, mostly for recording. Mine are stock circuitry currently and I am quite pleased with it for recording at line level. Never tried the built in mic preamps. .......

Just found one of these. 7.5 and 15 ips 4 channel portable. About 15% larger than the 772. It came with a 772 manual and a mimeographed 774 manual in Japanese! Takes a slew of c cells. Needs belts, .......

Rented the Millenia Preamps for an orchestral recording last year and they did not offer much improvement over my built in preamps. Next time I'm going to rent the true preamps and see how they stack .......

I would bet that this sounds about identical to the 1500 or 1520, as they use the same heads and likely very similar, if not identical electronics. It sure is a cool looking deck with those sexy large .......

The ASC machines(as seen in Pulp Fiction?) appear to be Braun machines with a few additional features and capability to use large NAB reels and to play at 7 1/2 and 15 ips. They show up in Europe fair .......

try german or other european ebay. Radio Netherlands used this size reel for their concert transcriptions that were sent to NPR stations in the US. Braun 1000 used this size reel. I don't think it was .......

Ampex 456, 406 and 407 was problematic until about 1991/92, at least in my experience. Scotch 250 was even worse- the oxide layer actually seperated from the binder and became totally unuseable, where .......

The Magnecord 728/748 used a NAB adaptor similar to old Ampex 350/440. Finding Magnecord adaptors might prove to be difficult. Ampex might work or Otari. .......

Keep an eye open for Harrison Tape catalogs. They were the tape equivalent of Schwann LP catalogs. Harrison published their catalogs from the mid 50s through the late 70s. .......

The arm in previous post appears to be a FR 64S, which is a high mass arm. The cartridge looks to be a high compliance Ortofon. I would not think this to be a good combination. Lots happening on this .......

Hope this is allowable. I have some nice first pressing LPs that are not mint, but very decent(mostly VG++). Some might have a slight edge warp or pressing bubble. These are too nice to toss, so hopef .......

I'm also headed to Tokyo shortly. Any inmates know of good places to hunt for Japanese jazz LPs and cartridges/stepup devices? Koetsu, Denon, Fidelity Research, etc.. .......

SP-210 used 4 12AX7 tubes vs about 8 for the 216A. 216A had VU meters, more functions and a built in power supply. Most 210s were powered from 232 or 260 amps. The 210 is an under rated line section I .......

The Everest open reel releases(1/4 and 1/2 track) were far superior to any of their LP issues. The Omega re-issues are quite fine though. Many of the Epic Szell open reels have good bass, unlike the o .......

Try www.irvmusic.com or www.arsantiqua.com. They are two of the biggest and best. Irvington Music is in Portland,OR and Ars Antiqua is based in Bloomington, Indiana. Both have monthy catalogs. Happy c .......

The Schubert: Sonatas are quite rare and valuable. The complete set makes the Bach albums VERY desireable. In all of the years I've been into classical collecting, I've never had ALL 3 LPs of this set .......

Most masters done in the US from the 70s and 80s were recorded on Ampex 456 and these suffer from "sticky tape syndrome". They can be brought back to a perfectly playable state by baking at 140 degree .......
