I visited one of those in NYC. Didn't understand why they would allow customers such liberties but in those days most of the customers for 33s were pretty responsible middle class adults. Can't imagin .......

Back in the day a guy told me Maggies were the way to go if you wanted to hear rock reproduced right, and he gave Led Zep as an example. I think people today listen at higher volumes than they used to .......

When I run a sweep frequency down below 40 hz I hear bottoming even at very low volume with the tone control flat, but few rock records get down that low. So a low-cut would be helpful. But the respon .......

Another option is a preamp with built in EQ like the Citation Eleven. Quad also made a pre with an interesting "tilt control." The SAE equalizer would be a good one, I'm sure. .......

I tested the rolloff using an online sweep frequency generator. Of course it would vary if I repositioned the speakers, but as I have them positioned at present there's a definite rolloff below 90 hz. .......

It's kind of a cautionary tale. Focals sound great at first but tend to be wearing in extended listening. Tannoys are probably more neutral and natural in the Bwiddish tradition. .......

Thanks Eli. I don't DIY but there is a very nice man in town who works on old tube stuff for very reasonable rates. What about an HK A500. Ad says no hum or noise and a website says it handles 4 - 16 .......

I just listened to the PSB xb's at Crutchfield. Crutchfield has a screen with a bunch of speakers behind it that you can switch in and out but you can't take them out and move them around, so it's kin .......

Something I read that surprised me is that while 90 db in the midrange sounds very loud, 90db from a low organ note does not sound that loud. So it may be that stand-mounts are being asked to reproduc .......

Quad ESLs are probably beyond my budget. But isn't it dangerous to buy them used? I think of them as delicate speakers that nobody can repair except Quad, at a very high cost. Like buying a used sport .......

For under $300 you won't find anything very good on the new market. If you have access to a truck or van and can pick stuff up you can consider some rather big old speakers that'll blow your flip flop .......

Apart from Sony being a big Japanese company, they have had little presence in the speaker market since the 1970s. Most speakers are branded British or American, even though made in Malaysia or wherev .......

I've never heard of Manhattan Pacific speakers. Adcom was and is a respectable brand. It sounds like your speakers just need refoaming. This is a common problem with old speakers that used foam surrou .......

I bought a Sherwood 32 wpc integrated on ebay once. White face with gold trim, lovely amp. It sounded fabulous but I sold it to raise money for school. Still miss it. But I love the Fisher sound too. .......
