AR L-pads are notoriously junk. I replaced the ones on my AR-5's with discrete resistors made to approximate 50% on the midrange and 100% on the tweeter. It eliminated the dropouts permanently. ::: TO .......

Does the hum increase with the volume control? If it doesn't change with volume then I would replace the power supply caps as a precaution. .......

I don't worry about it. When I renovate my tube gear I try to use power supply caps with higher voltage ratings. I rarely see voltages higher than 122V. .......

AR-XA for sure. There is not much to it so it is straightforward to service....and it's pretty easy to pick up spare units for parts. Some might disagree but I think the Dual 1219/1229/1229Q units als .......

99% isopropyl alcohol and Triton X-100 are all reasonably nonpolar substances. That's great if all of your dirt is nonpolar. If you plan to rinse with water, it would be useful to also have something .......

I still have and use that table with the Formula 4. It was a worthwhile project. It wasn't totally by choice. One of my son's friends broke the original arm using it as a play toy to launch army so .......

You might need to bend it slightly to get it to lock. I have an M91E and the carrier locks the cartridge very securely. Make sure you engage the little lip on the back of the frame as well. ::: TOPIC: .......

Definitely check the voltages coming off your EL84 tubes- anode and cathode- to make sure the tranny is good. It looks like the anode (pin 7) should be ~350V and the cathode (pin 3) should be ~60V. If .......

My SE 2A3 amp (also with a 5V4) does the same thing at power up but it takes about 10 seconds to become dead quiet. I've learned to live with it. It's a scratch build amp and it's done this ever since .......

Those 5R4 tubes are great to keep on hand. I occasionally use them in place of a 5AR4 to reduce B+. They are also handy for amp testing since they are cheap and plentiful....rather than torching a per .......

Most automatic turntables have a "trip pawl" that the arm pushes on at the end of a record to engage the autoreturn. Sounds like yours needs a lube and is pushing back on the arm as it tries to engage .......

I collect them because the thin sound quality on a lot of the pressings reminds me of listening to classical music on WQXR (kabong) on our Telefunken Caprice table radio. It's a very subjective thing. .......

I'd be careful with that diode mod. The stock caps on the unit are good to 500 volts or less. Even with the dual 5AR4 rectifiers you are pushing it with modern voltage. Expect to see close to 500V on .......

You probably need to remove a few more side panel screws. There might also be a screw loop on the tube deck that you've overlooked. Some of the Scott mpx boards have a jack on the mpx board for testin .......

I have a 299A which has essentially the same preamp section. I agree with the other posters regarding the switches. Once I bypassed the mag selector as well as the noise and rumble filters, it helped .......

There isn't really a single rocker switch on a 299A that you really need. I would advise you to bypass them all and not bother trying to replace them, unless you really want rumble filters, phase reve .......

If I was really anal about this I would advise you to store your stuff in a gas tight container purged with nitrogen. Ambient gasses like oxygen, ozone and water vapor are all reactive. Nitrogen isn't .......

Old plastic gets brittle in time. Maybe the extra fat base of the 6550 puts more stress on the keyway if the tube is rocked. Most octal tubes have smaller OD on the base. I keep some of these replacem .......

The original 299 has two sets of phono inputs. Have you tried using the other one (mag 1 vs mag 2)? Make sure you set the phono slide switches for each channel to the correct input. .......

Make sure that the phono cables don't run adjacent to the turntable power cord or the power tranny of the amp. Try moving the cables around and see if the hum changes .......

I think in your situation it's more about force per unit area. You have a lot of contact with the groove using a conical stylus so your 3 grams is spread over a larger area that an elliptical tracking .......

The Fisher 400 is a bit shallower than the 500b/c or 800b/c. They all fit in the same case and have the same size front panel which makes the 400 look more gargantuan than it really is. .......

I would take out the rocker switch and replace it with something heavier duty. Sounds like it was underrated for the task at hand. You may need a cap to keep arcing at bay. .......

I use Klipsch Heresy's with my homebrew 2A3 amp. Not bass heavy at all, but if you don't like the Klipsch sound you may want to try something else. The Heresy's are easy to find locally and not so exp .......

Interesting- never thought of doing it this way. I usually put the 10 ohm resistors on the tube cathodes which helps to set DC balance. You can then put the multimeter leads on the cathodes of each tu .......

I had that issue once on one of my tables with the Shure VxMr. The brush would cause the arm to skate off the album on set down. Running brush up made the issue go away. .......

what kind of tube is it? does it still behave wonky when you put it in another socket? It could just as easily be a bad resistor attached to rhe socket that comes on when it gets vibrated from moving .......

Maybe one of your systems is reversing absolute polarity and you are sensitive to that.....also try reversing BOTH speaker connections to see if that changes things. Some amps do reverse absolute pola .......

I've had a set of JJ EL84 running in my Scott 299A for about 10 years now without incident. It's supposed to have 7189. Plate voltage is supposed to be about 360V in that amp which is a bit above a st .......

For whatever stupid pennypinching reason, Scott put DC balance pots on the 340A but no bias pots so you can't easily adjust bias...which you should be able to do especially if you want to run preci .......

Have you had your unit recapped? You may have blown your power supply caps, tranny or 5AR4 tube. Don't put another fuse in until you do some basic diagnostics with a DVM and a variac. Your fuse might .......

Here is a side-by-side picture of the EH7591 and the EH7868. Notice the difference in the size of the plates. Internally they are not the same tube. They may have the same specs, but they are definite .......

You might expect the output tran right next to the 5ar4 to get hotter than the other. It wouldn't hurt to have a spare set of power tubes....if you don't have a set it's a good time to do so....swap t .......

A quad of EH 7868's is not that much more expensive than a quad of EH 7591's.....it's a wash when you consider the parts and labor to refit with octal sockets. That aside, I think the EH 7868 is a bet .......

Some of those vintage units have a wafer on the selector switch that routes signal to ground when not being used. Maybe that part of the selector is dirty and not routing fm to ground while you have o .......
