When I went from a Rega P9 to my SME 20/3 with Series V tonearm, it was a major improvement. And the P9 is a good 'table! The cartridge on both was a Benz Ruby. Then when I upgraded to a Lyra cartrid .......

The high end fuses produce very audible improvements. So do vintage NOS tubes vs modern production tubes. It all depends on how revealing your system is. .......

90% of reissues do not sound as good as the originals (especially first pressings), in my experience. Thats why clean originals sell for the big bucks. .......

Look at the post/pic below from IVAN303 You see the RCA on the left with the diagonal support rod? Now look at the United, which looks more like your tubes. The GEs look a little different I believe. .......

You should know that vintage tubes are often re-labeled. RCA did not manufacture these tubes. They re-labeled them. RCA manufactured 845 tubes have the diagonal support rod. .......

They might be United if they are not GE, but I never saw RCA with vertical support rods. I have many pairs of NOS RCA from the 1940s and 1950s and none have vertical support rods. If they are United .......

The reason I posted my system was to show the results of years of experimenting and tube rolling etc. Took me almost 10 years to come up with the system that I really love. I have not changed it much .......

In Cary amps, the king of 6SL7s is the Mullard 1950s ECC35. They must be nos however, not "used and still testing good". I've rolled all of the tubes you are discussing, and the Mullards are tops. Als .......

Tubers, the SLI-80 should have a lovely midrange. If you have stock caps, the Jensens are better, and the Cardas are better yet. You should be using good NOS tubes to improve mids. Try Tung Sol 6550 b .......

I ran the Jensens for the last 10 years in two sets of Cary amps, and never had a problem. They had one bad batch about 8 years ago from what I've heard, but that problem is long gone. .......

I auditioned both kinds and prefer the smooth top tubes on the left, by a small margin. The nipple tops on the right did not sound as good on my system. Less high end detail to my ears. I only listen .......

I would suggest just replacing the single EH and rolling the 6SN7s first. Get a nice quad of NOS Sylvania 6SN7 GT tall bottles from the 1940s or 50s. Not crazy expensive, and you should hear a big imp .......

I've done that a few times. An expensive record with a skip can be almost worthless. If you can save it, it is well worth the effort. I have not used a silk pin though---I will try it next time. Nice .......

If you have to mix them, the smooth grey and the holes in plate are ok to mix. I would not mix in the older black plates. If your amps drive them hard, the BPs do not have quite the capacity for plate .......

Totally system dependent. They are the toughest tubes you can buy---they last forever. I loved them in my Cary 303-300 but I now have a Cary SACD-PRO, which is not tubed. My 303-300 sits in the 2nd sy .......

Those are real. They sell for decent money, too. I find them to be too veiled on the high end. A very warm tube, overall. The clear glass 1950s Brimars are much more to my liking--no loss of high end .......

Depends how dirty they are... It should improve the connection, and perhaps get rid of some crackles when powering up, but I don't think it affects tone very much. Perhaps others have opinions on this .......

First, I wire brush the pins--use a fine wire brush---size of a toothbrush. Then, I soak the pins with Deoxyit and scrub them some more. Spray one more time with Dyoxyit to blast off loose particles, .......

There is a reason that the metal base 50s Holland-made tubes sell for hundreds each. The Mullard fat base are also very good. Even the thin base Mullard from the 60s are very good. Make no mistake--- .......

Have her request to pull the blocks from the MM production line before they cut the side finger-slots (for lifting the cutting boards) Looks better on the audio rack that way. She's gonna kill me. :) .......

That is where I bought several blocks. Agreed that I would much rather use solid (non-laminated) air dried planks---if I had a source. I already am looking for one, and my friend in far western Washi .......

Solid maple planks are def better than the Michigan Maple laminated butcher blocks, however the MM blocks are much less expensive. We agreed that under amps etc that they are good, but we had to remov .......

I have about 20 NOS NIB Ken Rad black glass VT-231s from the 1940s. They sound fantastic--one of my favorite tubes. Every one of them has crystal clear glass on the top of the bottles. I find that bur .......

Once in a while, NOS tubes---especially 6SN7/6SL7/ECC35 have small pin-burns over the filaments from testing/burn in---BUT if you have obvious, large, burn marks ALONG with a flat sound and lack of hi .......

Were they never-used tubes (clear bottle tops), or "used/test good?" (filament burns on top?) Black glass Ken Rads should have a lot of bass slam, and a warm overall tone, BUT the high end details sh .......
