Dates weren't always exact from what's on tube and what's on box. That's a mil contract box. It has the Ray EIA code of 280..which is correct. Tube fit in box is total irrelevant. Of course..the print .......

That's a can of worms. Various manu iterations of the same "type" of tube will put out a different voltage. If you consider the circuit as a whole a constant, lets say in this case it is, then the inc .......

The best 12AX7 is the one that sounds best in your particular amp. With all the variables within the circuit (materials, resistance/cap variation from spec, tube manu materials, etc) a new manu tube m .......

The EF86 is a pentode, so yes, you can find (2) with close to same specs. There are plenty of good NOS still out there that will probably do you better than a JJ. More expensive yes..but why not use t .......

The 12AU7 and 5814 are pretty much the same. Minor value differences. So, if your amp can't use 12AU7's..it can't use 5814s either. 12AU7, 5814, 7316, ECC82, 6670, 7489, 7730, CV4003 comprise this fam .......

Polam made very good EL34's. I've got a bunch of NOS and the internals are exactly the same as the old Teslas. Maybe a case of rebrand..or using same parts and manu in Poland. Irregardless...they are .......

Not really good right now. When the overall economy is soft...disposable income suffers and tubes are not a necessity...like going to the dentist...unless you have to. Hang on to them until a better m .......

JG is nothing more than the code the Mil used for GE. JAN is Joint Army Navy designation, which included all the manus who bid on and ultimately produced a batch of tubes under military contract. 5-St .......

In the 50's, RCA 6V6GT's were mostly blackplate. I'm fairly certain there was a period when they were producing both grey and black plates. What is the date code? if no clear date..what is the product .......

I run a Dynaco Stereo 80 power amp that currently has a quad of Genelex Gold Lion KT77 (new manu) in it. The amp has the Triode/Pentode switch. On triode...it's less powerful but very nice sounding. P .......

No. How long any tube lasts is dependent on build quality and how it's run in a circuit. There are so many variables in that story, one can't tell with any certainty how long it will last. jstrm ::: T .......

The Gold Lion KT77 of new manu are fabulous tubes! I use them in my Dynaco Stereo 80's and a set in a Marshall 1987x 50 watt Plexi. In the few years they've been in use, they sound great and the bias .......

That assumption on Hickoks is not quite correct. The plate voltages used varied widely between models as did the minimum acceptable values. NOS/NIB tube values also vary considerably out of the box... .......

On a Hickok 539C the min value per triode for a 12AX7 is 875. So, it depends on which tester is used for measurement. Not all Hickok's use same base numbers. jstrm .......

Not much. Filament wires can rattle. I've heard same..some do, some don't..all have worked perfectly well. In guitar amps, I've yet to hear one make a mess of the output. Not many pick up an amp while .......

Early 60's RCA blackplate 12AT7WA are real nice. GE made a 5-Star 6201 that works well too...IME. Sylvania blackplates have worked well for me also. Actually, there are many AT7 variants out there for .......

Yes..I run the new KT77 GL in my Dynaco Stereo 80 power amps and also a Marshall 1987x clone I built. Both sound great and have lasted a long time with very little degradation in output or performance .......

How about Ray 6922 blackplates? Kinda rare bird, but I run them in my amp and they work very nicely. Amperex BB and USA JAN Amperex have also worked well for me in my amps. Understand..your amp is pro .......

GE also put those guts in there JAN contract 6L6WGB's in mid 80's. Only a slightly smaller glass envelope to fit certain applications..radios. I use them a lot in my guitar amps. But...my favorite GE .......

No...it's not the "best". There is no "best" power tube when it comes to guitar amps. All the common and many uncommon power tubes can be made to sound spectacular in a well thought out circuit design .......

There are plenty of good NOS types out there that will work fine and last. JAN Sylvania blackplates, Mullards, GE grey-plates, etc. Prices depend on who you get them from. Not all are "outrageous". Co .......

Yep, I saw it. I put together the rig I mentioned, but I used a 100 Marshall OPT. The B&K IsoPak has turned out to be a real find...it came with 4k in tubes someone gave me. I can run the plate voltag .......

If you think a 539 is not up to par for testing your tubes...why did you buy it? They are good testers...for doing what they were intentioned for...giving a relatively good/accurate reading of a tube .......

I disagree with most of your complaints. Good testers have detailed and time consuming cal procedures...which should be done after replacing electrolytics and any suspect components. Hickok 539C does .......

Lets set the record straight here. The NOS GE 6550A you purchased from Tube World starting in the early 2000's to 2011 AND the ones you purchased from me were all from the same LOT and same MIL Contra .......

Do you mean MPD? Those versions were made post '87. They are not the same as the mid-80's mil contract 6550A's. It appears your friend was mistaken. A not uncommon occurrence in these days of internet .......

Not GB...but you might be very happy with the 60's RCA JAN 12AT7WA black-plates. Plates are 2-piece crimped. I've been using them in my Dynaco stereo 80 power amp for years...with not a single problem .......

Well, if NOS prices don't scare you off and you need tight bass, some GE 6550A would certainly tighten things up. I'd rec some high qual pre-amp tubes to go with them too. You have many options. jstrm .......

Yes..that's happened somewhat on the Ampegs...but I've had more luck with the ARC owners. Some of those amps use a BIG number of them...and everyone seems to be happy with them so far...other than cos .......

TA, I run the Genelex Gold Lion KT77 in my Plexi 50 hand-wired, 5AR4 recto'd clone. They work great. I wouldn't use an JJ stuff. I got a pair of those JJ KT77 when they first came out and it was a jok .......

I had a pair of brand new ones, blue glass JJ EL34, that came in my new Groove Tubes Dual 75 amp, in 1997. They lasted 15 minutes before they crapped out. And they were biased at the GT factory. Total .......

I think there is some confusion here. Philips has some mis-marked rectifiers: the mid-80's 5V4GA were actually 5AR4's. It was done to fulfill a mil contract requirement so retooling didn't have to be .......

Yes, but not Mullard..Amperex. They did the same thing...took GE 5751 and branded them as their own. I don't think the Philips consortium made 5751's at all...but I may be mistaken. jstrm .......

Those were some of the best 12AX7's made. Generally not a noisy tube at all, and Baldwin, like some of the other organ manu's, screened many of their tubes before put into service. Allen was another r .......

The reason was Philips ECG had a mil contract for supplying 5V4GA's. They already had the tooling set-up for 5AR4, so instead of "going backward" so to speak, they just relabeled the 5AR4 as 5V4GA and .......

If I sell a pair or quad of some type of power tube, I always ask the customer what his plate voltage is and what bias he is running. It helps in picking out a quad that will reasonably "fit" in his a .......

You might want to try an alternate 6DJ8. I've used most of the 6DJ8 and variants in my amps and the ones that gave me the most problem was the Matsushitsa...which was weird, since i've had great luck .......

You shouldn't have any problems. Just bias them correctly. I've run all those older tubes, both NOS and used at very high plate voltages and never once had any problems because with the proper bias se .......

Your amp doesn't see transconductance...it see's/feels current, that's why Jim sorts them that way. And yes, it is very important! Now, you mentioned your amp has individual bias pots...which is good. .......

Get some mil surplus ammo cans. Make sure the seal is Ok on the lid and you should be GTG! For individual tubes...wrap in toilet paper and put in correct size box...make on ends what it is so you don' .......

B&K 707 is good. Look for one that measures transconductance, not just emissions. TV7 D/U is good also if calibrated correctly. Hickok 539 series is another good one. jstrm .......

If she has a 6000A and you are using a TV-7, you will never get the same kind of readings, calibrated perfectly or not. Different circuits will give different readings, this is clear when the accepted .......

The EL34 are RFT skinny bottles commonly labled Siemens, Telefunken(late), Marshall, National, Philips ECG. The GZ34 is a Sylvania large plate, marked Philips because Philips bought Sylvania...yes the .......

Well, you could use some nice GE 6550A. Not exactly cheap, but sound pretty good in many amps and they'll last if not run excessively hot. jstrm .......

It dosen't matter. As long as you like them and it sounds great to you in your system, that is all you need to be concerned about. A tube in one amp may not sound good in another. jstrm .......

Not all gold-pin tubes have shiny finishes. I have many NOS Amperex USA 6922, 7308, etc with gold matte colored pins. Kinda like chrome plating before they polish it up! jstrm .......

There are NOS still out there that sound great and aren't that much more than "re-issues". Blackplate JAN Sylvania/Philips are an example. They do sound very good in audio apps. jstrm .......

My experience with the Tektronix labeled is with (2) matched pairs of Amperex 12AU7 Bugle Boys. They are still in the orig Tek boxes with their part numbers. They obviously tested them again and sorte .......

They are a bullet proof version of a 6L6 type that was originally made by Bendix and then also made, to fill contracts, by Tung Sol and Cetron. Those pic'd are new manu version by Cetron who still mak .......

You may want to try some GE 6550A in the power section. They are crisp and detailed. They sound great in my amps..and they may be a good alternative in your PLDII. Good luck! .......

Mr. B, My amp is a mid-90's Dynaco Stereo 80. From what I've read, they didn't make too many of these. They were made in N.Y. I bought 2 of the power amps and am glad I did. The tube compliment is 12A .......

No you can't with parameters you've brought forth. Similar date codes mean nothing. Get them tested on a good tube tester for transcconductance and then in an amp or other piece of equip that will put .......

One type you might want to look at is the Tesla (not JJ) E34L. I got a Ruby matched quad about '98 and just very recently plugged them in my amp. They sound very nice. So far I've rolled Svetlana Gold .......

Mounting vertical - not necessisarily. Some tube testers (my TV7 and 539C) have them (83) mounted horizontal. I'm sure space considerations dictated that - and they work fine. V/r jstrm .......

To have power tubes really matched - you want to have them read generally the same for both transconductance (micromhos - from the better tube testers) AND for current draw (milliamps) at plate, scree .......

Those numbers look like they came off a tester (my guess is a TV7). If so (a TV7 anyway) those numbers can be converted to transconductance values, but how they got current draw within 5 ma with those .......

Mr. 6V6GT, I have a 5-pack of Raytheon USN 6922 sitting here. 1962 with a "D" getter and black plates. Red printing and the 280 code. I don't believe they are relabled. Haven't plugged them in yet so .......

Do what I did. Go to an old second-hand store. Look under an old pile of rotary telephones and find a Fisher KX-200. $5.00 and it sounds like a million! .......

Are the miconal based, black plate, mid-60's, Sylvania 6SN7WGTA's a decent audiophile type tube? I see many like the VT-231, but am curious how these compare to them. TIA! .......

Tired Tech, Yes they did. Got one in my hand right now. NOS JAN from '67. Triple mica, extra support rods, ala RCA Command 5751 and others, and black plates. Raytheon had a code of 280 on the ones the .......

Quite possibly. Good chance it's a 6n14n that's been relabled Pro-Comm. There have been a bunch of these in circulation lately. Not bad tubes though. On the auction though, matching on a B&K 707 tells .......

artn, According to Nolan Lee's extensive excel spreadsheet listing of almost all tubes, a 6GF7 is not on it. It is on my tube chart for a B&K 707 though. jstrm .......
