If I'm not mistaken, the 12AU7 is used as a cathode follower in the output stage, and has very little effect on the sound. The input stages affect the sound much more extensively. .......

I've seen quite a few octal sockets that arced between pin 3 and pin 2. (plate to heater). I suspect it was caused by flyback voltage caused by an unloaded output transformer, though. .......

I agree that they roll off above 8kHz, but they do have usable response to 15 kHz. The trick is to cross them over higher, like around 10-12kHz. That removes a lot of the harshness. .......

Nothing special about those. Just another Chinese made capacitor. An Orange Drop or Mallory 150 series in .02 or .022 will work just as well. If for some reason you prefer the Xicon, I believe Mouser .......

I dont think there s a minimum value. I have seen them used in Choke input circuits with no input cap. But if you exceed the maximum value, you can expect shorts and arc-overs. .......

I never trust a 5AR4 that has arced over, even once. The cathode to plate spacing is much closer than a 5U4. In a 5U4, the filament is the cathode. They will take more abuse. .......

I tend to agree. Most rock, although it can have a wide frequency bandwidth, is highly compressed, with little dynamic range. If you want dynamics, listen to a good recording of the cannons in the 181 .......

Sounds like the PVC insulation is decomposing, and outgassing Chlorine. That's what causes the greening of the conductor. I've seen it before. Only fix is to replace it. .......

The LF section is rated at 1200 watts. They were probably biamped for theater application. If you used a passive x-over, it would require a lot of HF attenuation to match that driver to that LF box. .......

I've never seen a Fender Bassman that used 6L6G. The early Tweed amps used small bottle 5881's. Sometime in the early to mid 60's, they switched over to 6L6's, but 6L6GC was available by that time. :: .......

You should be able to look at the solder joints to tell if they came in it. I recommend not using that amp with those Black Beauties, original or not. They're notorious for getting leaky or shorting. .......

Might want to verify it's the movement. I had a 600A, the meter had stopped working. Turned out, there was a wirewound resistor inside the meter housing that had become open. It resembled a small spoo .......

That looks like the opto sold by NSC/ElectroHarmonix for Fenders, but it's hard to tell from a photo. If it's for a Fender, it contains a NE2 Neon lamp for the light source. They require high voltage .......

It's possible that when they soldered it, some solder ran into one of the holes which prevents the tube pin from being fully inserted. If that's the case, replacement is the only option. .......

I don't recommend getting rid of the "death cap". If the amp has a three-wire grounded AC cord, the cap should be connected from neutral (white wire) to ground, however. This minimizes the "death" pot .......

This is a SE 6550 amp I built in 2004. I still use it. It has a DPDT triode/pentode switch. The switch is only rated at 240V. I have had no problems. I prefer pentode mode. .......

Converting it to EL-84 is not that easy. 6GW8 is a triode/pentode. It has a power pentode section, similar to EL84, and also a triode section, similar to 1/2 of a 12AX7. It's like a 6BM8, but differe .......

The horn inside the box was for portable use. Bands actually used to carry those around on the road. (ask me how I know) :) I suspect that configuration altered the LF extension. .......

Those Goodall caps in your unit look to be old paper and foil type. They are notorious for becoming leaky with age. I would definitely replace them. I have a Conrad Johnson PV2 preamp which I upgraded .......

Ive repaired a lot of Marshalls that blew up while using those. Some required output transformer replacement. Marshalls seem more picky about correct loading than some amps, possibly due to the amount .......

I've found Sylvania 6J5G (coke bottle shape) to be excellent sounding. They have round plates, like a 6SL7. Something magic about those cylindrical plates. .......

Most high end recording consoles use conductive plastic linear slide faders. They are usually made by P&G of Great Britain. They make rotary pots as well. They certainly have a smoother feel vs carbon .......

I have a JBL tech bulletin that gives T/S parameters for their various speakers. It does not show D140, but has specs for K140 and E140. X max for K140 is .20". Xmax for E140 is .14". I find that odd, .......

6CA7EH is the only "fat bottle" 6CA7 that I know of. Don't run the tall skinny EL34 types. That amp runs about 550V on the tubes, and the EL34 types do not last long in it. .......

First, check for DC on the output. There is an input offset trimpot in each channel which can get dirty. That will cause the LEDs to hang. It should be adjusted for minimum DC out after warmup. ::: TO .......

I have not seen any worms, but they apparently were there because of the hundreds of cocoons and lots of dead plant. I've been picking cocoons off by hand. They nearly killed the entire plant in a mon .......

I've had good results with TungSol 6U8 (original, not reissue). A lot of 6U8's hum from heater to cathode leakage in the pentode section, old TungSols usually do not. There are some 7199 to 6U8 adapte .......

They are usually mounted in a clamp arrangement so you can rotate the tube, centering the image wherever you want it. Power it up and rotate as needed. I know of no other way to tell without powering .......

No, the tapered tube inside the driver between the phase plug and the opening is either plastic or Bakelite. I have seen them broken before. He might be able to work some epoxy into the cracks with hi .......

Yes, the bias is adjustable. If I reduce plate current down to 12 mA, the hot spots disappear completely, but the power and tone quality suffer. .......

I changed to a pair of JJ 6V6S, they don't have the hot spots. Normally, I stay away from JJ octals, but in this case, they fixed it. I think the TungSol was a defective pair. The screens are drawing .......

I agree, 450V is too high, but that is how Fender built it. I didn't design it. If I make changes, it will devalue the amp. A 65 Deluxe Reverb is worth upwards of $2,000, but less if modified, assumin .......

That was plate current. I didn't measure screen current, but the screen voltage was just a little less than plate voltage, maybe 5 volts difference. I was mostly curious why the hot area was so small, .......
