Just when does that darn vinyl melt?

I felt like running a controlled experiment. The oven was readily available, and I installed the thermocouple gage made by Omega to monitor the temperature.

Among the most common vinyl formulations there are Type I and Type II. I used Type I since I had it available for test, plus it is the softer of the two, and has lower melting point.

I didn't even bother setting the temperature to 200F, as I knew it would not do anything. The material gets soft, but it still looks and feels like a solid. I went to 350F.

After an hour at 350F the material is very pliable, and it feels more like a rubber - you bend it, twist it, and it returns to its shape, if let go. If you cool it - it will retain the shape, of course.

400F. Still no melting, of course. It gets softer, but it is still NOT a liquid, far from it.

500F. It still holds its shape, it doesn't look anything like liquid.

Trying to fuse two pieces at 500F produces negative result. It MAY be possible, but with a lot of pressure.

At 520F finally something starts happening. But IT IS NOT melting. It swells and now reminds a sponge. But it MOST DECIDEDLY doesn't behave like a liquid, it doesn't pour.

At that point I aborted the experiment.
