In the humble opinions of you fellow inmates of the Asylum, which makes a greater contribution to the "warm", wonderful sound of tubes in audiophile gear - tube amps, tube preamps, or both?In my case, I have been happily listening to my McIntosh MC-60 mono blocks since I picked them up in 1979, pumping them into a pair of Altec 604e's through a variety of solid state preamps, most recently a MAC C31V. In fact, I just picked up an MC-225 but haven't hooked it up yet.
I am wondering... should I consider a vintage or reissued MAC C-22? If I do, will there be an increase in noise? Will a C-22 really contribute much to the overall sound? I don't really want to plunk down what will most certainly be big bucks to find out before consulting my fellow inmates.
Thanks in advance for your responses.
