Hi,

I have a friend who just got married and he let me borrow his AudioNote Soro SE 18 watt Integrated.

I have been wanting to hear an SET with my 89db efficient speakers, however I had worried that it wouldn't be enough power. The nomimal impedance of my Excelarrays is 10 ohms nomimal and 5.5 ohms minimal. The builder told me that I would have the equivalent of a 95db efficient pair of point source speakers, at my seating distance of 13+ feet from the speakers. The reason being that a line source doesn't drop off as fast as a point source.

I hooked up the preamp outs to my SS Monoblocks on Friday night and wasn't impressed by the sound.

Saturday, I made up some longer speaker cables and ran the SET integrated directly into my speakers. The sound was so inviting. I didn't want to stop listening. The midrange magic was their in spades. The biggest thing I noticed, was the soundstage specificity. I felt like I could walk up and stand next to each of the performers, within their own space.

I recorded a respectable 100db of output from my seated position, playing some Rock songs, so the volume I got from this 18 watt SET is pretty respectable. Once I tried to go above the 2 O'Clock position, I started to hear clipping. Most of everything I listened to was at the listening levels I usually listen to with my 180 Watt monoblocks, with the exception of a few. I listened to Beethoven's 9th and although it had good volume, I could see myself yearning for more.

So, now my pursuit begins. I'll need to start listening to other SET's to get an idea of what might work. Unfortunately this is the only SET that I know of in the area. I can go to Cary Audio (90 minute drive) and hear there stuff at their place.

Anyhow, this was extremely enjoyable. I'll probably catch some grief on this, however it made my CD's sound more Vinyl like. Now, what did it make my Vinyl sound like ..... Pure heaven.

Have a great day,

Brad
