if you tell Sony to search their American database for the two SACD repair centers, formally in Boston, MA and now in Bristol, PA, they'll see that many units have been repaired for this very same problem. The motor that pivots the two fixed lasers goes bad. The units cannot hop between formats and hence, the bad motor lock the player up. They also replace a minor optical device, but this isn't the failing part, the motor is.
I just got my SCD-1 back last month, from two trips to Sony Repair and the first time, they just replaced the KLH Optical sensor and it still failed right out of the box. I sent it back in TELLING them to replace the motor and they did. It's been fine for 5 weeks or so.
Richard Kern says the part is like $95 or so, but shipping the unit is the worrisome thing.
Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.
Take care, Chris
PS: You can always tell Sony Repair to read our archives and they'll see that there is an inherent problem with these two units.
