I, and many others, have bemoaned your relative lack of coverage of the inexpensive end of our shared passion, high-end audio. Whether this is due to myopic prejudice, rank ignorance, servile amorality, or a preference for stroking your friends matters little to me. This hobby is declining by the day in the face of competing interests and the steadily increasing cost of the ante to play this game. You aren't going to increase your readership, or help the readers you already have, who don't have the big bucks to invest in stereo, by not covering equipment that presently flies under the audiophile radar. I have recently assembled a system, composed of just such equipment, whose quality of sound has shocked me. I DARE say it is better than the majority of the rigs I heard at the recent show in San Francisco. It cost me $1205 to put it together. I CHALLENGE YOU, with all of the contacts and resources at your command, to come up with a better CD-based system for less than $2000. Whether you win or lose, the greater good will be served, and you just might gain some new readers.

UNDER-THE-RADAR SYSTEM

Sony DVP-NS725P DVD/CD player [$130] (THANK YOU, Merle)
Samson Servo 260 amplifier [$195] (THANK YOU, Todd)
Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 bookshelf speakers [$340]
(2) Energy S8.2 subwoofers, one for each channel [$540]
