Burn in -- does it mean that.................

There has been a lot of recent discussion about the necessity for burn in -- 50 hours, 100 hours, 200 hours, 2 months, etc. But, the question is, what is the method of burn in? Some seem to say simply having a component plugged in and powered up constitutes burn in, while others seem to say that the component must actually be playing for the entire time to constitute burn in. There would certainly be less wear and tear on a component if it could be burned in simply be leaving it on and powered up rather than playing it. Any thoughts? I'm about to buy a new MSB Link which apparently requires much burn in.
Many thanks.
