Hello -

We've been looking at the possibility of doing some sort of product that would support the new high-resolution formats, but haven't yet made any definitive plans. It seems apparent to me that these new formats have already failed, so I'm not sure of the value of offering hardware that could support them.

Currently, it would approximately double the price of a product to add support for a new format. For instance, our new CD player is around $3000 US retail. To add two channel SACD support (at a comparable performance level) would probably bring the price up to around $6000. I'm not sure that it makes sense to pay an extra $3000 for the capability to play only a handful of discs. Perhaps there will be some lower cost options in the future, but perhaps not, as Sony will eventually tire of losing money on this project.

The other problem is that many people are reluctant to buy a machine that isn't truly "universal". The retail price of a player that could play *all* of the new formats (including multi-channel) at an appropriate performance level would probably be in the range of $15,000 to $20,000. I really can't imagine that much of a market exists for this type of product.

We will continue to monitor the situation and make appropriate plans.

Best regards,
Charles Hansen
