Phono signal has no common mode noise rejection

A phono cartridge is a floating non-reference device. This means it has no zero voltage reference point thus no noise rejection capabilities.

A serious disadvantage of a balanced or differential input is the reduced signal to noise ratio. The coil of the cartridge can only produce a given output. Depending on how it is hooked up you get all the voltage on one pole or the other if you reverse them or if neither is grounded the total output is sent to each pole or phase but at half the voltage. This reduces the signal to noise ratio. The added amplifier also creates more thermal noise than if only one were used. There is no noise rejection possibility until the output stage.

In conclusion I would say there is no advantage of a balanced input but for compatibility purposes a balanced output could make sense.
