No one has been screwed by Jolida. They typically call their first run of product ###A and when they make a significant cosmetic change or some significant circuit change, they call it ###B. That has been typical and the models don't change number with simple component upgrades such as a better volume control or capacitor, etc. These are just "running changes". As Fred pointed out, the casework is basically the same and the number of holes or vents punched is of little relevance as the unit does not get hot with only two small tubes in it anyway. The latest amplifiers have silver faceplates rather than the old gold color, yet they are still called ###B, so they don't always change the model number. As long as you buy unmodified Jolida products from authorised Jolida dealers, you are getting Jolida products.
The JD9 is stenciled JD9 on the faceplate and JD9 in the latest price sheet. It was originally called JD9A when they were discussing its release but when the product arrived with JD9 on it, they left it at that. I have it listed as JD9A on my website and have never updated it. I have never heard of it causing any confusion before and they have offered products here for at about 10 years. We have been a dealer for 8 years and I have not seen too many changes in their designs, mainly the introduction of new models and a few cosmetic changes. They did change the JD102B to add a single 12AX7 driver tube rather than divide duties among the two others, yet they still did not change the model number. The same thing is true with the JD100 Cd player, it was originally described as JD100A. No difference as there is only one unit sold in the US.
There does not seem to be a lot of consistency to the numbering scheme and it is more likely due to poor communications between their Chinese manufacturing partners and the US firm rather than any type of engineering design standards. One thing has remained consistent and that has been a decent sounding and looking product for a very low price.
