Vinyl Asylum Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ. |

Greetings Fellow Asylum Members,Just finished 3 days in beautiful Boise, Idaho. There was nothing in the archives regarding the used vinyl/thrift store situation in Boise. So I thought I should write a brief description of my findings. There are fifteen thrift stores in the greater Boise area. I was able to visit two in Nampa and five in Boise including the Big Three (St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army and Deseret Industries). I bought 65 LPs and my brother bought 40 LPs. Most LPs are priced at US$.25, but a few were priced at US$.50 or US$1.00. I saw no Barry Manilow LPs at all, and only two Barbara Streisand. There was very little rock and not much country, which surprised me as Idaho is very much a Western agricultural region. There was a lot of religious music, as I expected and quite a lot of the Firestone Christmas albums. Very few box sets such as Readers Digest or Time/Life. At least 50% of the LPs in the bins were easy listening Mantovani types. Though I did pickup a very nice Peggy Lee, a Doris Day, and a mint Tony Bennett.
There was a surprising amount of classical. We got three London Bluebacks, five RCA Shaded Dogs, a Tulip label Deutsche Grammophon, quite a few six eye Columbias, and some very nice mono London and Plum Dog RCAs. Only saw one Angel LP which is unusual. While some of the classical was on the 'light' side, there was some fairly sophisticated music as well; i.e. Schoenberg, Mahler, Bruckner, Khachaturian Flute Concerto, cello trios with Pablo Casals, etc.
Got to the Deseret store one day after a large opera collection had been dropped off - mostly Pavarotti and Domingo, but also some Solti on London. My brother picked up about 30 of these opera LPs.
The real surprise was jazz. I can go months without finding any jazz LPs at all. Here in Boise I found several Andre Previn Trios on Columbia, several Columbia jazz samplers, and the best find of all, the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz 6 LP box set. I have been hitting the thrift stores for 13 years and this is the first one I have found. The box has two split seams, but the LPs are unplayed. I paid US$.79 for all 6 LPs, including sales tax.
So, if you are coming to southern Idaho, be sure to hit the thrift stores. Lots of good, cheap vinyl. Boise also has some very good gourmet restaurants. The local microbrews are also very good - as good as anything in Colorado. We did visit one of the local wineries, St. Chapelle - limited selection but some very good wines at very affordable prices.
We've got a 19 hour drive to get back home so no soundtrack pics until Wednesday. Dan - Thanks for posting your soundtrack pics. Those are great albums.
