I have owned almost all of the Mac and Marantz amps, but the Craftsmen C500 is my choice. The Marantz model 2s are great too, but the C500 sounds at least as good (probably better), but for a lot less money. The output power differential between them is trivial, unless you use low sensitivity speakers. Yes, it should be noted that Sid Smith did some of the design work on the C500 and the majority on the Marantz 2.

The "problem" with the C500 is that they are often sold as single mono amps and two are rarely the same (parts). Actually, this isn't a problem. Be patient and get two off eBay. Then have them completely restored (they are going to need it anyway) with identical parts. Unrestored, singles can sell for in the $300 - $500 range. That would put them at or under the $1000 limit.
