This history is almost right but not quite. You would probably be interested to read one of the threads on Arsenal.net where the early history and relationship between Edgar Vilcher and Henry Kloss is related in some detail. Ken Kantor and Tom Tyson who were very involved at AR back when and are a wealth of knowledge about all AR products and the history of hte company are regular contributors. It is not surprising that you had problems duplicating the live versus recorded experiments and demos AR gave with their equipment. The first of them in the 50s was using AR1s which was at the NY Audio League, predecessor of the AES at Aolean Hall where 4 AR1s were paired against the Aolean Skinner pipe organ. There were parings of AR3 against the Julliard String Quartet. I heard two myself, one with AR3s against a guitarist and another with AR3s and AR4s against a 1905 Nickelodeon. This was at two different NY High Fidelity shows. The last I believe was AR10pi paired against Buddy Rich the drummer at AR's factory. Recordings were specially made out of doors to avoid double echo. (Don't ask how they made the pipe organ recording, I don't know.) While it is true that these demos may have been contrived to one degree or another, they were proof that AR speakers could under the right circumstances produce sound remarkably close to live music, at least the way it sounds in the place the musicians are playing. That may just not be good enough for home high fidelity.
