Tweakers' Asylum: Getting my bearings with Timken bearings... by Wellfed

Some futher thoughts regarding the Timken bearings for interested parties.

I had previously mentioned that small DH Cones were a nice option with the Timkens, but after further experimentation I now see that they are actually essential for most applications. Without the DH Cones the presentation is pleasing but lacks "snap" on percussive instruments. The only application that I've found that doesn't require their use is under loudspeakers, even then small DH Cones in the assembly provide better PRaT than without.

Another thing I've noticed is that the Timken raceway can be eliminated altogether if a small DH Cone is used underneath the assembly. Sound in my setup is not as full, but ends up being incredibly detailed. I've never heard the lyrics so clearly as I have with this setup. In the end though I preferred the assembly outlined below between DAC and transport.

Currently I am setup as follows

Standard setup, without DH Cones, under loudspeakers

Upside-down setup between DAC and transport (upward pointing small DH Cone on DAC, upsidedown Timken bearing over cone, Timken raceway facing down over bearing, transport rests on raceway)

I would like to try cones on top and bottom but am unable to do so as the height of the Timken bearing is not deep enough to accomdate the pair. It looks like the profile of the medium DH Cones would allow for this.

Hopefully some of you will take the time to try these, they are without any doubt the most interesting and accomplished footers that I've ever toyed with.
