Yes and no. The pinout, contrary to some posts I have read is identical except for non-essentials i.e. your amp will not short, blowup, or do anything out of the ordinary. However, the bias requirements for the 6l6/KT66 family are usually in the -40s, whereas El34/KT77s typlically are in the 30s. With proper bias adjustment any of these tubes will sub for each other. I've done it many, many, many times. The plate to plate primary impedance is different with these tubes, so a more desireable sound can sometimes be achieved w/a little experimentation. And again, with bias adjustment subbing any of the aforementioned will NOT harm your amplifier. One last note, the European EL34 is a true pentode, as is the El37--a tube that works like a 6l6 and biases like an EL 34; this might be just the ticket.(Godawful expensive and rare, though) The 6L6, American "Big Bottle" 6ca7 anf the M-O valve KT77 are all beam tertrodes, as opposed to the E family pentodes. If you can adjust bias ans measure current draw, experiment without fear.
