The noise at idle is a funtion of a few things. How much noise is coming from the preamp, the input sensitivity of the amp, and the sensitivity of the speakers. If you have an amp that needs little voltage to bring it to clipping and Klipsch corner horns which are very effecient (over 100dB with one watt), and you hook up a high gain preamp, you can see where the problem lies.
A local hifi shop just bought some tubes from us for a demo system. Thye plugged them in and at the same time changed to an amp that is designed to run direct from a CD player (if the user wanted to). They hit the roof thinking they had bought noisy tubes. I pointed out that they should plug in the old tubes n the prsent system or change back to the old amp for comparison. They did. The new tubes were indeed quieter.
