a couple of Lambda comparisons

thylantyr -

Most of my experience has been with the Lambda TD15X Apollo and the TD15M Apollo. I haven't heard the TD15H Apollo, but I'm sure there's a strong family resemblance.

The thing that sold me on the Lambda woofers is how good they sound in the midrange. They are across-the-board better than the 15" Altec 414 and 515 drivers I've played with (okay, the 515's were more efficient, but the Lambda's were way more musical up & down the scale).

The Pioneer TAD woofers are very serious competition for the Lambdas, and vice versa. Both are very lively, quick and dynamic. Both have superb resolution and bottom-end slam. In the systems I've heard, I'd say the TAD's were a bit tighter in the very bottom end, and the Lambda's had a bit more weight and better midrange. However, I haven't heard the Lambda's in the same ultra-slow-rolloff alignment as I heard the TAD's, so I can't say for sure that the Lambda's wouldn't be just as tight in that case.

Comparing the two Lambda woofers I have, the TD15X woofer goes deeper and will shake the whole room, while the TD15M has probably the best midbass and midrange I've ever heard from a large cone, and retains its liveliness down to a lower volume level than any other cone I've heard. Unfortunately, the TD15M has limited X-max, and really doesn't do the bottom octave, which the TD15X does. So I'd have to say the TD15X is probably the better all-around woofer.

One final point in favor of the Lambdas is designer/builder Nick McKinney. He's a real prince to work with.
