If so, consider checking out the Bonavolta and Angela websites for single ended, class a pentodes and triode-wired pentodes. I have tube PP, SE Pentode, SE triode-wired Pentode and SEdhT (single ended, directly heated triode). The SE Pentode (with a little negative feedback) provides by far the biggest sound quality return for the money. And yes, it has that class A sound; smooth, remarkably detailed, clean, great micro-dynamics and surprising macro-dynamics. As a bonus, the cost of the output tubes is far below that for the simple (low cost) SET circuits. Just compare the cost of a new or NOS 2A3 to a 6BQ5 or EL34/6CA7.
If you simply must have a SET, then I would recommend the JE Labs most recent revision (on the Angela website). Really, on close inspection they are all pretty similar. I think that you could build most any of them and be pleased with the result. This is not likely to be your last amplifier. Choosing any of these will not be a mistake.
If you are on a tight budget and will have to live with this choice for a few years, then for the same low budget, you will get more sound quality by saving money on the output tubes (using pentodes instead of triodes) and spending the saved money on better output transformers and passive parts (resistors and caps). Of the tube amps I have, I like the SET the best, but in the cost range of a SE pentode, I think that the SE Pentode amp would sound better than a SET for the same cost.
