Phil,Yes, you can build a back for the wood panel traps, but it needs to be thick and massive so it doesn't flex at all. When I've built traps with backs I used 3/4 inch MDF and also put 2x2 cross-braces every two feet screwed and glued to the MDF (on the inside, of course).
Also, you mentioned 2x2 wood, but for this "system" you also need an equal number of low-bass traps that use 1x4 wood.
