Robert, I've had one in my system for about a month now and although I am prone to a bit of hyperbole, I stand by my statement wholeheartedly.
According to theory, this device, and other related manipulations, improve our ability to perceive sound in a more pleasing way. I am aware of the premise behind its operation, but until the Clever Little Clock came along was somewhat dismissive of the subject. I am not any longer. I will leave the why's and wherefore's for others to address as I haven't the qualifications to do the subject justice, which also REALLY happens to be a huge can of worms.
In practice I find the device tohomogenize AND expand the soundstage (front to back in particular)
dehomogenize individual images
increase resolution
provide greater dynamic contrast
there's probably other stuff that I've yet to identifyresulting in sound that is, subjectively speaking, WAY mo' better.
A curious aspect of the effect is the highlighting of what your system is doing right along with highlighting what your system is doing wrong. More curious yet IME, it manages to do this so gracefully that even though system flaws are more noticeable, the end result is still FAR superior to the starting point. My comments are obviously in the context of my own system and carry the standard disclaimer that YMMV. I am completely awed by the fact that I really can find no bone to pick with my systems performance. I still find that my system lacks convincing scale, and I still notice, actually even more so now, the effects of some slightly non-linear footers that I'm using, but the system sounds so good that these items come across as truly minor quibbles and hardly seem to matter. I am still going to work on eliminating these elements, but they are no longer distressing to me to any degree.Wild, wacky stuff as Johnny would say. These truly are heady times for the perfectionist audiophiles of this world. So now with the preliminaries out of the way; Let the fight begin. ;-)
Actually I'm hoping to see a prim and proper debate. Not too likely I know.
