I’m trying to figure out the benefits of ASIO over Kmixer in my music server setup.I have a Windows XP PC with a USB Audigy 2 NX playing ALAC files from PC Itunes and DVD-As using the Audigy player. I’m using the 5.1 analog outputs of the Audigy, not SPDIF.
When I defeat Kmixer, I get no output from Itunes (no surprise). With no Kmixer, I do get DVD-A output and software volume control from the Audigy player, but I lose the 5.1 mixer capability.
I’m now experimenting with Jriver MC11 set to ASIO to get past the Itunes Kmixer limitation. With Kmixer engaged, MC11 plays ALAC files just fine, though I’m not sure this gives me any benefits over PC Itunes. When I defeat Kmixer, I get no output just like Itunes, even with MC11 set to ASIO.
So here are my questions:
Do I need an additional ASIO driver to get ASIO playback working with MC11?
If I’m not using the Audigy to SPDIF to a DAC, does ASIO playback give me any benefit over Kmixer?
Is the Audigy just resampling everything to 48khz for analog playback anyway, making the whole ASIO exercise useless?
Thanks for your help.
Russ
