A far earlier amp

designed specifically for driving electrostatic speakers is the 1975 Threshold 800A. It used no fewer than forty-eight 150 watt output devices in order to battle the worst case scenario target back then - the Dayton-Wright XG8. The current issue of TAS has an interview with Nelson Pass regarding that objective. My '81 Stasis (pictured) served well for nearly twenty years driving Acoustats in that same capacity. With only 100 watt / channel output at 8 ohms, it used only thirty-two 150 watt outputs. You'll note the physical design of the Sanders amps is quite similar to the early Thresholds having large power supplies and multi-kilowatt capable output sections.

Naturally, the newer Pass stuff uses toroids, lower ESR caps, etc.
