If some is good, and more is better then too much

is just right!

Given the results of my first dynamat experiment of putting strips of dynamat around the driver frame and against the mdf frame, I decided to go further:

I simply cut strips small enough to not cover the holes on the pole pieces. This was a bit more difficult on the tweeter portion which in the pict is the right side of the frame. But if you are careful this is pretty easy.

I listened after every strip added and as you can see I didnt quite finish. See, I was spending more and more time just listening, and after a while was just glued to the listening chair. It was one of those "I have to listen to every song to see what I can hear that I havent heard before" moments.

SOme of the recordings were just downright spooky. Like Jeff Buckley (the cd with Lilac Wine). The nuances in his voice were so real and right in the room more than ever before. The resolution that zapping the vibrations before they get to the mdf is staggering. The imaging was not effected at all by the dynamat being in the way, infact it was improved dramatically.

Now the Dynamat soaks up certain frequencies and converts it to heat. It is probably best to mix it with other materials that soak up different frequencies too. I plan to add some rope caulk and some 3m damping sheets.

Maybe the Marigo dots tuning kit is in order? But right now i will be staying with inexpensive materials.

The dynamat is fairly easy to remove since it has only been on the speakers a few days. My amp has had it on for over 7 years and I was able to remove about a 4th of what I had put on. It just took time say 40 minutes.

With this application though on the speakers you could go faster with a putty knife as the cosmetics really dont matter that much. The trick is to let the butyl do most of the work.

Finally, getting rid of panel vibration has been the largest change in my system, especially in resolution. It has changed the balance of the system to be sure. In very positive ways, though some systems might not benefit from increased resolution. But for me at least I would rather have all the resolution I can get as it adds to the musicality at least in this case. If I had to I could live with this no problem as it is.

Anyhow I will update the results when I add the 3m and rope caulk. They say in other applications that one can overdamp things with Dynamat. I dont think I am at that point but I plan to add the other materials just in case. If some is good and more is better than too much just might be perfect....
