I've known Earl for several years now. Back in November of 2005, I posted this on the General board:* * * * * * * * *
I thought you might like to know that Earl is one of the most intense listeners I've ever seen in action. His concentration is with the totality of his being, focused like one of those Shaolin Temple priests from the old tv series Kung Fu. And he very much has a subjective side (ask him to recommend some music DVD's some time), but he doesn't make design changes based on a single subjective evaluation, not even his own. However, he will make design changes based on extensive measurements (which can confirm or invalidate a subjective evaluation) and solid acoustic theory.
Also, Earl's loyalty is not to Earl's opinion - it's to the truth, and if he can be shown that his opinion is wrong then he has no trouble at all admitting his mistake and changing his opinion.
Earl was in a rock band in his younger days, and has musician friends some of whom have become his customers. He attends live music performances quite often, and I know that recently he took a fairly long trip to hear a concert that featured a particular soloist. He listens to music deeply probably every day - it is a huge part of his life. He easily switches back and forth between passionate music lover and passionate scientist.
Just for the record, in my dealings with Earl I have found him to be a man of absolute integrity. No he doesn't typically use wording that studiously avoids stepping on toes (you'll note that he's a helluva lot more concise than I am), but I can say that I have never seen him mean anyone harm. He can think someone's opinion is baseless, but he's talking about an opinion - something transitory - not the person. Unfortunately human nature is to take criticism of our opinion or performance as a personal affront. Earl is blunt and succinct rather than laboriously tactful. But even when he was once somewhat critical of some of my actions (justifiably so, and I was of course taking it personally), he never intended it as an attack. I've had to learn this about Earl, as he's very easy to misunderstand because we're used to less honest interaction than he is, and we're inclined to take things personally. Data isn't personal to Earl, and that's what he's talking most of the time.
I hope you get to meet him sometime. He's been accused of being short on people skills (surprise, surprise), but he's not at all short on technical ability or honesty.
