Based on my recent experience resolving similar skipping & TOC read problems, I conclude that such problems should be tackled in the following order & rechecked after each step. Sony Svc will probably just replace everything in the transport at once. In the States there is no problem ordering piece parts directly from Sony at 800-488-7669.Steps 1,2 & 3 should also be performed as periodic maintenance.
1. Remove, lubricate, and reassemble sled motor. Lubricate by spraying DeOxit into motor housing.
2. Clean & lubricate plastic gears of sled assembly sparingly with moly grease.
3. Lubricate spindle motor jewel bearing with moly grease and a drop of teflon oil into collar bearings at either end. If the spindle bearing is noisy, replace the spindle assy.
4. Replace laser. It is unlikely that the laser is out of allignment. Prior to removing the old laser, measure the height of the laser pickup body to the nearest mm at both ends, relative to a reference point on the transport billet. Adjust the replacement laser to this height. I found that SACD and CD will play OK within a fairly wide tolerance of height adjustments, but that the sound will change with fine adjustments. No doubt using the test CDs and a scope is better, but not necessary.
5. Replace sled motor.
6. Replace spindle motor assy.
6. If the main board has been in and out repeatedly due to modding, resolder the surface pins of all connectors to the PCB. These connectors may come loose and cause intermittent problems, tho probably not in your case.It takes about 30 minutes to do this work.
Regards,
Dave
