Sure, you either:1/ make up a special shorting plug that goes into the socket that takes the cable that comes from the top cover. Then the machine works normally withoutthe top cover, but this is hardly worth doing unless you are working on a lot of them, so:
2/ they provide a two pairs of (really small) solder pads on the PCB that you can solder across, this serves the same purpose but you wouldn't want to do it too many times on a given player before the pads lifted...

PS Ihave tested your idea of restarting a track on the SCD-1/777ES and *maybe, just maybe* I hear what you have been on about. But if you consider it an important change - take a listen to a Level 4/5 unit...
