Hi to everyone,
I strongly recommend this arrangement to every open-minded audiophile form whom spaciality, soundstage and imaging are among top priorities.
1) Position your loudspeakers along the front wall as near to it as maintainig the quality of bass permits
2) Spread them 1 meter / 4 feet apart maximally (not minimally – maximally) and turn them outwards to have them facing the side walls – left speaker facing the left wall and right speaker facing the right wall
3) The front wall and the area of side wall that the speaker is firing at must be as reflective as possible
4) It’s good to have a broadband sound absorber behind the listenig position (on the rear wall) to prevent creating reverberation
5) It’s good to use speakers with as wide horizontal dispersion as possible
6) However the attenuation of the highs is inevitable in such an arrangement. One can try digital frequency equalisation as I do with my Behringer DEQ between transport and DAC. Of course this is not solution in fully analogue system but in case of digital source it works satisfactorily (at least for me)
7) There is little theory behind the above configuration – I just experimented a lot with my diy speakers. These experiments brought quite interesting results.
8) Inspiration comes mainly from Ralph Glasgal’s Ambiophonics (I liked the idea itself but not having absorbers in the middle of the living room), the ‘stereolith’ idea (www.stereolith.ch), JBL Paragon ‘reflective principle’ and some theoretical assumptions of David Moulton’s ‘Moulton Room’ concept
I know this whole idea looks weird but it’s worth giving a try. Don’t judge it by resulting treble’s attenuation – it is expected and it could be appropriately dealt with by use of currently available technology like digital equalisation
Greetings

ps. Excuse me my clumsy english – I’m not native speaker :)
