That if the item was made in Canada it is subject to NAFTA and therefore would be a duty free import into the US. I'm speaking of IMPORT duties here, which are not / not the same things as sales tax. You may have to pay sales tax in your state.

Keep in mind that shipping companies have this legalised theft thing called "Brokerage fees." These fees are charged for the company filling out a Customs declaration and putting the item through a secure Brokerage facility, wherein they do nothing at all to it, save attach their invoice to the side of the box. The costs vary based on the value of the goods. UPS is by far the worst offender and charges through the nose (don't be surprised to pay at least $50 for this "service"). FedEx is better and, from what I've seen, DHL better still. The best way to go is by Express Mail. In Canada, Canada Post charges only $5 for packages crossing the border that require the collection of taxes or duties, no matter what the value of the item itself. I don't know what USPS charges but it's probably a lot less than the shipping companies.
