Microdynamics, one more time.

A symphony has a dynamic range of about 100 db; a rock band about 10 db. Loud, in this case does not equate to dynamic contrast. I define macro-dynamics as the overall sense of impact, slam, power. The most common complaint about macrodynamics might be compression - a reduction in the overall range of the presentation.

I understand micro-dynamics, however, to be the dynamic structure of a sound that requires quickness and speed. More specifically, how responsive is the system to a sound's attack? It must be quick and of an appropriate contrast to the overall presentation. Secondly, how nuanced is the main portion of the sound between the attack and the decay? At issue are the internal dynamics of the note.

When discussing dynamics, it is not enough to describe in absolute terms the range between a system's loudest and softest sounds. Microdynamics are are essential to the realism of the dynamic presentation. Quickness, speed, and resolution are at issue, not loudness, slam, or impact.

Dynamic contrasts (very different from 'slam') are an important aspect of musical expression and contribute greatly to the sense that some listeners may describe as 'live.'

These are merely my opinions and are not offered as Audio Truth -- nor do I hold up to contempt those who might disagree with me. One's ears can deceive -- and that's why I know to ask for the opinions of others. Thanks to all who provided feedback.
