Assuming DVD-A has a chance to become financially viable long-term, what benefit would there be to the merged company to kill it? Sony would not "lose face" if pre-merger BMG elements continued to produce DVD-As, because it would be "them" doing it :-) Perhaps some sorely-needed format delivery standardization would come out of it, as that's something Sony/Philips did very well with SACD, and the DVD-A manufacturers have really screwed up.
OTOH the merger presents the opportunity for both camps within the merged company to take a long, hard look at the current state of the hi-rez market and decide if either of the existing hi-rez formats will survive. If they decide one has a better future than the other, it's better to kill off the runt sooner rather than later, then move the catalog over to the survivor as quickly as possible. If it's neither, then it's high time they start finalizing whatever will be a reasonable replacement.
