The ST optical system is a different transmission media than TOSLINK. The two are not compatible. ST is quite a bit more expensive to include in a product, and is not found in mass market items like your Marantz. The ST transmitter and receiver alone can cost $100, plus another $50 for a cable. The ST system was designed for telephony, not audio. If you are handy you can retrofit your player using components available from Digikey. If you have a choice betweem using your TOSLINK and a coax output, go with the coax.
