Why would pointing out your inattention "step on my id"?

No, Freud would have likely also observed that you didn't pay attention to the topic about speaker cables (what do preamps have to do with speaker connections?) and simply didn't answer the question posed.

As a metter (sic) of fact I have read some of his writtings.(sic)

Thank you! That is the answer to the question. Then you understand why simple, low feedback designs (implemented with either tubes or SS) are desirable.

Why would anyone waste that much money on high $$$ cables for a garage system?

Fair question, although I wouldn't use the word "waste". Most everything in the vintage garage system is either a hand-me-down or surplus from the main one. Using a 400 watt Threshold amp with the DAs is also a bit overkill given that I rarely listen to it above 4 watts total on peaks. On the other hand, it stays in class A at that power. Regarding ICs in general, RF rejection is just as valid with that system as well.

I've heard the A1s many times. The old head stuck in a vise for any semblence of imaging, to me, is a headphone.

While I would agree that is a valid criticism of my older Acoustats, I don't find that to be the case with the U-1s in my room. A 90 degree radiation angle is not particularly narrow. I've yet to hear any headphones shake the room!

From 40 Hz on down any planer's (sic) response drops like a rock.

Measured in room response with the U-1s is +/- 1.5 db from 30 hz to 200 hz. There is actually a fortuitous 2 db rise at 25 hz relative to the baseline level due to room effects. While I haven't measured the results, I've heard Magneplanar 20.1s likewise provide solid 30 hz response. I confess that I'm not much of a pipe organ freak nor do I have many recordings with significant output below 25 hz that I am missing. On the other hand, adding a pair of UB-1s would handily address that. No physical laws are violated using over sixty square feet of radiating area or the equivalent of fifty 15" cones. :)
