A really effective way to remove silver oxides is to put boiling water in a glass dish (pyrex) and mix in a half-cup or so of baking soda. Tear-off a small width of aluminum foil and sink it in the bowl. Then put the silver wire in it and the oxides should immediately come off. If there is a lot of oxide, the tarnish should start to appear on the aluminum foil. Works great for your sterling silver flatware etc.. too.
