Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

From a former sceptic...

I would like to add to G Man's and Duster's comments. I was a former cable sceptic myself and still am a relative newbie in this subject. Anyway, here's my $0.02:

My take on this is that once you get your system to a point where it becomes "revealing", then you will notice the difference in changing cables quite easily. You will also be able to tell differences between materials (copper/silver), dielectric materials and connectors.

My system own went through a lot of carefully budgeted changes (modifications/upgrades) in order to get it to a state of becoming revealing. These changes included rolling capacitors and tubes on my tube amp, changing opamps on my external DAC, adding damping/vibration control to the components, speaker placement, power noise filtration and upgrading components. Components matter a lot. I was barely able to tell the difference between ICs before I added the TAD-150 preamp to my system. The process to get my system the point of being revealing took something like eighteen months (mainly due to budget constraints), with some grumbling from an otherwise appreciative wife.

Now I am able to easily tell the differences between cables. For instance, I recently found a dramatic improvement in sound when I changed the stock power cords in my preamp and amp for DIY ones by Chris VenHaus design. I can also easily see the differences betwen single and bi-wiring my speakers.

Now some websites, AudioHolics et al, will try to convince you that you will not be able to tell the differences between power cords, for instance, and that all cable of reasonable construnction and guage should sound the same.

But my own experience has lead me to believe quite the opposite.
