Let me expand on that.

I've never used a solder pot but I have the technique down using a hot soldering iron. The iron doesn't need to be 800 degrees, but 750 sure helps. You hold the tip of the iron against the end of the wire because there's no enamel insulation on the end. Wait a few seconds for the wire to heat, then apply solder. You'll see the enamel bubbling off and you can then "walk" the iron and solder up the wire until you have enough enamel melted off for your needs. The wire will be perfectly tinned. This method uses up quite a bit of solder.
