Over on the Digital Drive forum of AA I have several posts on my experience with a 3950 and 3960. My current CD playback is an Audio Note DAC 3 fed by a CEC TL5100Z.
The summary version:
the 3950 out of the box blows away the CEC as a player, but still has a way to go to match the DAC3. The 3960 is quite a bit better out of the box, but the DAC 3 still gets more detail out of the pits.
Last night I bypassed the output stage altogether, the DAC goes directly into some good film caps and then to the preamp. This sounds WAY better. It was actually better than the DAC 3 last night. This morning its sounds terrible, way too bright, but thats most likely standard cap burn in which hopefully will go away sometime soon.
I've been very much amazed by these cheap little boxes, they are doing something right.
