Agree with all who say so much will depend on your system--components and interconnects--and also add that it's more fun to buy handfuls of different types and try for yourself. With my system, the newly-working FP sounds best with Tung-Sol 12au7s, followed by the RCA Clear-tops. Mullards were nice and warm but not as much bass, and Telefunken 12au7s (not the 802s) were more even and clear-sounding but for some reason lacked the earthy, funky, and "musical" feel of the Tung-Sols.

One alternate tube that I just tried and loved is a (presumed) Raytheon tube that Steve (@ Angela) sells as a 12az7n, which is really a 6829. Only $5 per tube if you buy a lot of 10 of them, but among the 10 I received a few have some microphonic issues, but still sound great. Tighter Bass, silky but clear highs, and detailed midrange. Higher gain rating (60) than the 12au7 (17) and also higher voltage (450v, 900v combined), so if you want to use these on a regular basis, you will likely want to beef up the transformer, but I can attest that (at least with my system) these do sound fantastic.
