Re: Looking for Unfettered, Loud , SEX!

These "Mini-VOTs" (Mini Voice Of the Theater) I have built up are way high on the sonic factors, but fall way low on WAF (Yeah, these cabs are almost as ugly as a bucket full of squirming toads).
This particular one is getting a test run down in the cellar, and the acoustic coupling to the concrete floor does wonders for the LF response!

These are HB "Karlson" cabs that someone built about 40 years ago, I found 'em at the local dump, installed 12" Pyle PYM1298 drivers (same as Eminence Kappa-12) and the horns are vintage 33 year old Altec 811B horn, with 806-8A compression drivers and N801-8A crossovers (800 Hz).

Originally, Karlsons were designed to use a coaxial or full-range speaker, and they had issues with harshness or "shoutiness" of sound quality, I found that crossing out the internal speaker around 800-1000 Hz and then using a top-mounted HF driver solves this problem in a very good way. Unlike conventional speaker design wisdom dictates, the insides of the cabs have no acoustic padding or stuffing, and in fact, are hard-coated with an epoxy resin in order to increase the internal reflections. The inner speaker baffle and slotted vents are mounted at an angle, this helps eliminate most standing wave resonances. Material is all 3/4 or 1 inch marine grade plywood and the back cover is particle board, also hard-coated on the inner surface. Tight fit and tolerances are essential, and yes, these puppies are HEAVY! Definitely all eight woofer mounting screws are needed (and I used the nylon-insert #10 locknuts), don't cheat and try to get by with only four...

The SPL is about 98-99 dB/W/M and they sound very good, and the bass extension is amazing - no subs are needed. At 2WPC these are quite loud, with 10-20 WPC they can cause threshold of pain SPLs and at 35-70 WPC they almost become sonic "weapons". I've run 'em with everything from the SEX amp, to a HB 6EM7 PP 10WPC amp, to Dynaco ST35 and ST70 and some 75WPC HB KT88 monoblocks I built up a few years ago. 75WPC is getting pretty close to putting the compression drivers at risk, so I don't run them too hard with that kind of power.

SEXY? Both yes and no at the same time ;-)>
