I'll give away a little secret. We used this iron for the amp building class. It's essentially the same iron that Weller and Tenma sell as their entry level station. It worked just fine for the students on all but the most beefy stuff like trying to solder to big fat speaker binding posts. It's no Hakko or high zoot Weller, but it's a great choice if you are not yet sure if kit building is your thing. If it does become your thing you can always go for a Hakko and keep this for backup, or put a pencil tip on it and save it for PC board work.

The guys at Apogee are super nice too. They also have great deals on solder suckers and DMMs. The DVM850BL totally rocks, we used that in the class too.

Xcelite makes a very nice shear cutter for a low price. Don't forget safety glasses! If your a middle aged old fart like a lot of us you can substitute some substantial reading glasses.
